The best option is to install Windows 7 Premium or Ultimate and use the options in Windows 7 XPmode.
It is best to install the system on two different hard drives.
If you have one hard drive that you can use Linux as a bootloader lilo or grub.

In my view and I use this every day
either get 1SSD and 1 HDD
      dual partition both.
Install Winxp first , then win 7 on the 2nd partition of the SSD
Win7 can resize partitions so if you make a mistake no problem.
      Never had a problem..

With 2 partitions in the same disk. Only you have to install WinXP First. After, you can install Windows 7.
You should install Win7 after, because it install dual boot loader and WinXP not.

If your PC supports Intel virtualization technology, you may install win7, raise virtual PC inside of win7 and install XP there.
If not You may do like that
You have to decide which instance will be main (for most applications)
For example you need win 7 to be main OS
            - Run XP installation from XP CD
            - Go some steps until you'll be asked where to install OS
            - Kill all the partitions, then make a partition about half size of a disk
            - Leave Setup program
            - Start Win 7 setup from win7 DVD
            - Install Win7 to existing disk configuration (don't let win7 to make changes to disk configuration)
            - Run XP setup again
            - When you'll be asked where to install, make extended partition and logical drive on remaining disk space and say XP to install itself to logical drive on extended partition
That's it. You will get a start menu with OS choices.
When installing apps to XP always check that you install them on the XP system root logical drive.

This will work, but this config is kind a dubious config.
My first offer is more preferred
And even more preferred variant is to install windows for games and Ububtu for everything else
            :)

What benefit would you get to install winxp and win7 into same pc?
Both practically run the same programs would understand if you were trying to
dual boot with a linux os but anyway the best method would be to install winxp
first then win7 because it supports dual booting.

                  Re: Win xp +Win 7

Windows XP has a few good programs that do not work on Windows 7 therefore XP is useful sometimes.
A more interesting question would be "Is it possible to install XP and Win 8 on a single hard drive?"

if you just going to use win xp once or twice a month you can have them on o dvd or a usb stick.

There are no good programs compatible with win 7 and 8 and incompatible with win xp.
                      :)

I don't see no problems with it. They utilize same partition types.
And about dual boot. Even win2000 has multiple boot feature. And XP has it. But still I'd recommend to install virtual XP in win7/8 if hardware is compatible.
