Re: windows freezes on boot up

If the pc is relatively old the best bet for motherboard failing would be a fleabay replacement as you probably won't find a new one,. However if you post you spec I could advise you better.

It is possible to get 2 - 3 year old pcs for around £70 - £100
    btw

Time to upgrade if you can afford it, you can get motherboard, CPU & memory kits quite cheap but you have to make sure your psu matches

Re: windows freezes on boot up

Trouble is , that if you upgrade the motherboard, cpu, memory and the psu is the problem it will have been an expensive upgrade.

Also without spec we do not know if the HD /DVD are sata or ide/ata. Then you also have potential size issues. Are we talking full tower , microatx etc.

We need the spec and size of case ..

Sorry to go back a bit but did you say that if you use the power switch at the back then the computer will reliably start?

If this is the case don't go splashing out on cheap (or expensive) motherboard replacements yet.
            Try the power supply idea.

If there are bust caps on the mb these can often be spotted and cheaply replaced...

Re: windows freezes on boot up

From what I understand, to release from the freeze you have to turn off with the switch on the psu. If you then let the windows start timer run through the computer starts and runs as normal. Well I suppose short term you could use hibernate rather than turn off. I honestly think that resoldering dead capacitors is beyond most people and as time is money a second hand near identical motherboard would remove one fault.

Do you have onboard sound or graphics, the reason I ask this is that it could be when you restart the pc with a hard reset they are being reactivated or perhaps deactivated. This could mean the battery on the mb is dead or a jumper cap has come loose on the mb and is intermitantly shorting. It is also possible that the reset jumper on the mb bios has always been in the wrong place.

On control panel , system., hardware do you see any yellow info icons or red crosses. or any sign of multiple sound, graphic or lan cards. Just a thought.

Re: windows freezes on boot up

In my eyes the mainboard is broken.
I had the same problem as well and it was the mainboard.
First I thought it was the powersupply but it wasn't .
But it can also be something else.
Can you borrough a power supply from a friend or so to try out?
                That would be perfect then!

not the mainboard i guess when the pc freezes at the start up
mainly it is the hdd or ram
just remove one ram stick and start up or use an other hdd

Before there was a problem with the computer doing something special? Changed the mouse, keyboard, network cable?
In one post you wrote that you could not turn off the computer by the button on the case. Check the cables connecting the board with casing (where is turn on, reset, hdd). Maybe there is a short circuit.
It may cause a problem with a program, service or a virus?

I think it's the worst senario.

A faulty m/b is something very bad.
Try a search to e-bay for a m/b with the same specifications in order to use again your memory and cpu.

I have had a quick look for a motherboard and i can get a good complete tower with xp on it for around the same price of a motherboard i only need it for basic programing and loading software on to a sat box through null modem cable like the f100 boot fault on spiderbox

A company well known for selling ink jet and toners has a great tower for £76..

                            Worth a look

Glad you got there in the end M8, Sad thing is that so many of these old desktops were just dumped out on skips a few years ago because people just did not think there was any use for them when they bought a fancy new laptop.

                              Regards Mobley3

Try the carboots I pick many a one up for under a fiver with very good spec unless you play games,They are great for internet, or as I use for cctv they make a great base station, and you get hdd drive 30 gig upto the access of 100 gig.
