During hibernation, all processes are blocked and saved on the hard disk. The processes are not killed. When you turn on the pc again, all processes are blocked shot.

confirm that hibernation doesn't mean "process running" but only a screeshoot of the memory (ram) on the hard disk.

So, no problem with hibernation, but restart your laptop sometimes because is good to have a clean start after a while.

I always turn off my laptop and disconnect from mains every night, same as I do with my TV and Satellite Receiver. Always best to be safe and also saves a little on the Electricity bill.

Hibernate = Shut down except that it saves your session on hard disk which has no effect on any of the problems you mentioned.

Standby = drains power and pc still runs but in low state of power.

shut down = Computer starts from fresh session on boot.

Hi
I used to leave my laptop running for hours at a time and it did in the end fail due to overheating.so turn it off when you finished and like its been stated up the feed helps promote healthy battery.. Also running on mains power for a long time battery developes a memory thinks it doesn't need a charge, starts not last as long in use..
If you're working on it for long spells get a cooler that goes underneath it..

I usually remove the battery and leave it on mains if im working long hours or watching TV whilst browsing. It leaves me worry free about the battery and I can leave the PC on for as long as I want.

This is a very important point. Once the battery is fully charged but you still have the mains plugged in, you are actually damaging and reducing your battery life by keeping it plugged in. Always remove.

Always leave your laptop on hard surfaces and the air ways open. Never on a bed or pillow it will suffocate and overheat.

The new laptops worth £500+ will not cause overheating problems even if you use them 24hours a day. I use mine 10 hours a day and I can barely hear the fan because it is in a cool environment and looked after properly.

May be I have mentioned this in another thread. I read an interesting tip somewhere on a computing website that If you drain the battery completely, take it out and wrap it carefully in a cling film so it makes it airtight. Put it in the fridge for few hours. Cooling down the battery increases its life. Havent tried it myself though.

From Yahoo :
*For NiMH and Nicad batteries (often used for electronics), storing them in the freezer might be more practical. These kinds of batteries lose their charge after a few days when kept at room temperature. But they'll retain a 90% charge for months if you store them in the freezer. Just like alkaline batteries, you'll need to wait until they've warmed up before using them. However, this isn't a problem when you need new batteries for your digital camera or other electronic gadget.

Battery manufacturers tend to agree. Kodak says "refrigeration is not necessary, nor is it recommended" and "freezing is not recommended" for its alkaline batteries. Duracell advises: "Do not refrigerate Duracell batteries. This will not make them last longer." Both recommend storing batteries in a cool, dry place.
A study about the processors says that intel processors are better than AMD's. They don't overheat as must as AMD and therefore intel's are expensive. Computers with AMD's will have more problems with overheating.

What's the harm of using Hibernate for a long time?
Afaik no power is consumed during hibernation. It just stores the memory contents to hd.

Hi,
It's right when you say that hibernation is just a dump on HD and no power is consumed when you use this future.
About overheating I know that today VIDEO chip is more exposed to this problem than CPU.
A lot of laptob becoming broken for this.
Best regards

I was surprised to see many mention that hibernation could cause damage. The only damage I could think of is HD usage, since memory is being dumped to it.

Hi Jerry2020,
in my company there were some HD brocken due a particular manifacture(IBM).
Colleagues use to put them laptop in hibernation.
Best regards

I knew that you should turn off your laptop and not put it onto hibernate because of the battery and and and....

But I am not sure if your laptop gets damaged if you put it into hibernate and disconnect it from the battery and cut the power supply.
Has anyone got an answer?

A tip: Because the new laptops got often cpu heat problems I would advice you to pull up the cooler speed 2-3 percent.
That helps a much.
The laptop isn't getting louder and the cpu temperature sinks 4-7 degrees.
If I helped you please press thanks button!
