turn off, hibernateor stand by for laptops?

    Hi guys,

recently I had this problem of overheating in my laptop, and had it cleaned. The technician told me that i should turn the laptop off every night instead of leaving it in hibernate or sleep mode.

I used to think that turning off laptops frequently reduces its life span but maybe I am wrong. Any further insight/experience on this issue would be appreciated.

    thanks

Never leave Laptop on Sleep or Hibernate if you are not using it for a long time. It makes it overheating at it continuousely charges and discharges and the system is busy all the time.

There is a structral and material difference between a laptop and desktop. Desktops are fine to be left on for ages. Thats how they build servers. Laptops are different. They are not plug and play like desktops. If something goes wrong then you have to change the whole motherboard unless you are an expert.
No one can decide How long is "Too Long" but If you are going out with mates and dont know what time you will be back then turn your laptop off, its better for it!

          hey again ;)

so to leave your laptop in hibernate mode is actually okay because your device will not use any electricity and the information from the ram will be loaded into the Hard drive check out ____en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibernation_%28computing%29

the only negative about Hibernate is that the software who controls hibernate mode is not always perfect and can cause your windows to crash.

For short times, sleep mode is different option you can choose, but the components on your device will be still running, that means only the unused parts will be take off like graphics or hard drive the ram, cpu, motherboard and battery will be still used. which will reduce the life span of your laptop and your electricity bill will rise :D

Best Regards hope i could help.

            hi

Have no real explanation, just my experience/tips: I never put my laptops manually on standby, but they do after some periode after 'inactivity' (think 5 minutes or so - good for battery/lifetime/screen) - when leaving I always shot down (let's say for a few hours) - very often use the battery (if possible use netpower). They start up much faster than my desktop and connect faster to the internet too (although desktop is newer, but has 'heavier' OS).

            So far my findings.

Re: turn off, hibernateor stand by for laptops?

diffrence is it takes longer to finish starting when completely turn it off. If restart from hibernating, it takes less time. secondly, when in hibernate, you can work immediately the next day without all the re-logging in and linking. if you fully restart, all the login and linking information is cleared.
laptop does not heat up while hibernating, and perform a power-down and restart once weekly, or when notice a dropoff in speed or functionality. self-hibernate, results are less predict.
do what works best and safest for you.

That is exactly what i used to do, i would never turn off the laptop just leave close the lid and continue next day from where i left, but the tech support guy told me that i should turn it off every night otherwise the lifespan of the processor is shortened.

The lifespan of the processor as well as the battery life will be shortened. If I know that I am going to be longer on the laptop and I am near to the mains then I remove the battery from the laptop. Thats's why I still have about 3 hours battery life when its completely charged.
PS I bought my laptop in 2008!

That's what the ICT'ers of my and my wife's work told us also: best to turn off when not in use for several hours or night (ok takes a bit longer to start up, but my laptops start up relatively quick, so here no issue).

The fact is that when you are in standby, the laptop is still connected to the internet. You get emails and your other programs rarely go into sleep mode so you get notification and weather info, test messages, depends on the softwares you have installed. The CPU (Central Processing Unit) constantly works. Thats the reason you hear the fan goes on and off at different intervals to cool down the CPU (in shorts, Processor), when its used.

Sorry, but I can't follow you here: what do you mean: better to turn off, hibernating (but I don't know what this is) or standby??

For security purposes I believe it is better to shut down completely when not in use.
If it is in standby it can be accessed by anyone intelligent enough.

I always save everything needed then always switch off good for battery life, I think some processes continue when in hibernation mode.

If boot time issue just switch on a bit earlier relax and have a drink.:D

No Processes continue during hibernation because the Cpu is off but in hibernate mode you can turn on your PC with just a click of your mouse :)
