Overheating in laptop

My laptop started to turn off itself lately and after doing some research I found out that it might be due to overheating of the cpu. I downloaded a free program called speedfan and there i see the temperature as 85 C which I think might be too high.

I know about cleaning the fans and then trying to put some form of gel in your processor will help but I was wondering if I can put some ice pad(plastic box) beneath my laptop to cool it off. Will this be a bad idea? Below is an image of how this plastic box looks like

not to sure about the ice packs TBH.
I reckon maybe you should look at getting a new fan.
They are pretty cheap and easy to change.

There are also external fans available for laptops (mech. attachment, by usb, cooling pad) - take a google, sure you find more info/reviews/prices.

you are talking about the pads with fans that go under your laptop right?

I watched a few youtube videos about how to clean your fan but it looks kind of complicated for someone who has never done this.

and i know from a friend that a white gel on your processor helps but is this really true and compatible with all cpu types?

Yes - exists in different variations, even with keyboard.

Didn't done this yet, but can't you simply take our your fan(s) and blow them out??

Well after reading that using ice packs beneath the hot laptop can cause condensation inside and this might lead to shortcuts, I took it to a computer repair guy and he blew air first to the fan then to the outside of the fan. it is good that my girlfriend did not the dust coming out of the laptop.
before the clean up even with ice packs below cpu temperature was around 85c now it is down around 45c.

Just to add something. What kind of processor do you have. If you have Intel processor then cooling it down might work but if you have AMD then its quiet difficult as its the structure and the material of the processor.

I was thinking about doing it myself just have never done it before and the youtube videos seemed a little scary with all the noise of taking the keyboard apart.

I found that how easy it is to open the laptop to the last screw and then build it back when I changed the motherboard on my laptop a few years ago. The motherboard failure was due to overhearting of a AMD processor. By the way intel processor should not be that much overheating, thats why they are expensive duo to their material quality.

We have had this problem last weeks at work. We have solved it with a vacuum cleaner. The start button was fully blocked

yes i was thinking the same thing, does the vacuum cleaner really work? the guy at the repair shop insisted that i should not use vacuum cleaners that i might damage the fan(?) somehow, but basically what he did was just use some special vacuum device.

There are some good tools available at PC World and Maplin but they are expensive. The best one i got from PoundLand, they were just a quid. Works great. Never seen anything again like them in £Land.

I have been playing with the vacuum cleaner recently. I have the speedfan(free) program running which shows the temperature on the processors, whenever i get the hose where the fan is the temperature drops from 47-48 to 43-44. well at least the laptop does not shut itself if i watch a blueray:)

wow the idea with the ice boxes are not good, never use water on a electronic device Its always a bad Idea ;D. The best solution for laptops is to buy a special fan like Pan already said these are indeed quit cheap now a days, But also it is Highly recommended that you clean up your laptop every six month max. And the Thermal Paste has to be changed every 1/2 or 2 years depends on how much your laptop is used. If you can't do it by your self, just do it like you already did and find someone who will do it for you.
But if you wanna learn how to do it, search on the net for tutorials how to open your special laptop because every Laptop is build differently so you need to search exactly for the same model name your laptop has.
