I don't know where to publish this post - decided here is the best
I want to tell about the pc I am using to watch Sat TV
hardware
First I built a system on Gigabyte Mini-ITX motherboard with Atom-330(dual core) and Intel 945 chipset. Instead of HDD I used 32 GByte CF card with CF-SATA adapter. Also there was an DVD-RW drive and internal card-reader.
As a HID-device I use a RII mini keyboard+touchpad (like this _http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILXuNkqo-hU)
The mainboard had PCI slot which I filled with Beholder TVTuner (analog/DVB-T). The DVBcard I used is TeVII S660.
This system was not too powerful to show HDTV so I decided to upgrade it a little. First I changed a mainboard. Now I got Mini-ITX Zotac MB with Atom 230(single core) and NViDiA ION chipset. I denied that CF card and installed a normal 160GB SATA drive, for CF was too slow and small. DVD-RW I chnged to BD drive just in case. I really am not going to watch BluRay disks for I treat it as a dead branch of evolution :). This new system is powerful enough to watch HDTV even thou the processor is weaker.
This mainboard has not PCI-slot, so I was forced to deny of analog tvtuner and loose DVB-T. This problem I decided - solution I will describe later.
TeVII S660 is fast and glitch-free card and I'm not planning to change it.
software
I use windows XP SP3 and DVBViewer. I tried win7, but it works slower, giving nothing back. When I tried Win7 I hoped on DX11, EVR and so... But I found DVBViewer doesn't see DX11, saying I need to uprgade to latest DX9. According to my experience the best DirectX for DVBViewer is 06.2010 distribution of DX9.
That PC is used only for watching media.
I installed all critical security updates, for this PC looks to Internet (how without it?) Router is DLINK DIR320. 3G modem - is WAN. 2 pcs on the network - This media PC and my big PC for games and so. They are wire-connected to router. wifi is only for notebook and PDA when they are on.
I updated the system with only reason - load all the work on powerful NVIDIA GPU instead of weak Intel CPU. So I use now corecodec 301 for h264, cuda enabled, and Nvidia decoder for MPEG2, cuda enabled too. I use Overlay renderer for it gives acceptable quality and it has a less glitches than others available in DVBViewer.
I will write more tomorrow - time to sleep, bye;)
