    Windows on external HDD

    Can I install Win on external HDD?

    I ask becouse I know that my USB keyboard doesnt work until Win is booted, so does Win can be booted from HDD (USB)?

    I don't think it can. I've looked in the past to have Windows boot off a USB drive and had no success at all.
    Technomate TM600 + 1m motorised dish (TM2300 motor).

        Once in past when I reinstall Win I forget Memory card 8Gb and computer put memory card as third particion.

          This I would do on a very old computer and I test bouth Internal HDD and External HDD, and external HDD is four times faster then internal HDD.:D

            I look now in Boot menu in Bios and there is only internal HDD. It looks like it cant be done.

              You could try and update the bios, a later one might allow USB booting.

                It is an old matherboard and socket 487 for P4, I look now and I have lastest version.

                  Try to plug an external HD or a USB Stick with you PC switched off, than switch it on and check in the BIOS if you get an additional boot device.
                  My old (very old) P3 laptop based on Phoenix BIOS detects USB devices only if they are directly connected to the MB before the bootstrap.

                  Actually on a P4 Workstation I can execute Linux from an external HD, BIOS is Intel

                    if its dell u have to download Memory Key Firmware Update to work properly as it says on dell website but i couldnt get it to work on usb stick

                      I try this and when I turn PC ON nothing happend, I heard that comuter working but monitor didnt turn on, so after 1 minute of nothing I turn PC one more time OFF and when I turn it ON then it work well, but he didnt recognize another boot device.

                        I finaly found how to use external HDD as first boot device.

                        There in bios is hiden option for up to 4 external USB HDD, I give up from finding solution for this problem and accidentally got into that.

                          It is not flash memory it is external hdd, and it is much faster then 80gb old hdd in computer.

                            i think that is possible if the motherboard support booting on usb devices but everytime you need to choose the boot options : boot from externe device
                            but as i read in some forum it's slow to boot an OS from an USB Device

                              it can , now days you can have Windows Xp on in a usb device that works great !so why not a HDD
