    Which graphic card?

Have just got a old computer which has Asus KV8 SE deluxe mobo with a AMD Athlon 64 3400 processor I am trying to install LinuxMint13 cinnamon but having problems at boot up.

I think this is due the graphic card being not up to spec, the mobo has AGP slot in which sits a Geforce 4 Ti 4600 card.

It also has 5 PCI slots, I know that Nvidia cards are well supported in Linux so is there a suitable graphic card that anyone recommend?

Hey so this is take 2 (as the old post got deleted )

Did you tried to to change The VESA settings at boot up? because your card is actually widely supported, if not try to look for an option when you Boot Up from CD/DVD/USB what ever you are using, and look for the Vesa option it could also be called differently like "Settings" or "Change resolution" it can even be a TAB option where you have to press Tab to change the boot up settings. Also can you please try to explain more specified what exactly happens when you boot up your system?.

It is only with cinnamon that I am having trouble it needs a 3D card I think.

At boot it freezes before it gets to logon screen even in recoverey mode.

what about the vesa settings did you tried what i've said? (btw to get to the settings on boot up you have to press TAB) try to type vga=791 if that is not working try a different number or try instead to type xforcevesa.

Also did you tried to boot in compatibility mode?

And if that all doesn't work try to boot up normaly and then wait for like 1 sec and press "ESC" to see what the kernel is loading and look for errors and post them here.

        Regards locan

          Re: Which graphic card?

I tried all the methods that you suggested but no help.

But my fault I assumed it was the fault of the graphic card because when booting up the screen was all garbled and when booting into WinXp no problem apart from it taking a long time to boot up and had got used to all Windows having long boots.

The problem was a secondary hard drive once I disconnected this I had no more problems Linuxmint only took a few secs to boot up.

I tested the secondary hard drive and it seems to be o.k but Linuxmint does seem to like it very strange.
