I use linux for 5 years now and your specs are really low but i think ubuntu server can handle this, the best way is to try the newest version if you get problems then try the older ones with that specs it will work for sure.
    good luck

        Re: Server ubuntu

        hi

found some info (see _hxxps://help.ubuntu.com/ ...)

        Ubuntu Desktop Edition
700 MHz processor (about Intel Celeron or better)
        512 MiB RAM (system memory)
5 GB of hard-drive space (or USB stick, memory card or external drive but see LiveCD for an alternative approach)
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution
Either a CD/DVD drive or a USB port for the installer media
        Internet access is helpful

        and:

A Pentium 4, 1GHz system is the minimum recommended for a desktop system.
        Recommended Minimum System Requirements:
Install Type RAM (minimal) RAM (recommended) Hard Drive:
No desktop 64 megabytes 256 megabytes 1 gigabyte
With Desktop 64 megabytes 512 megabytes 5 gigabytes

that's apparantly for latest versions, older ones needs less.

OK, so I just need to get a bit bigger HDD and some smargos.
My old PC is AMD 2200XP 1,8GHz, 1,5GB RAM
          So it should work.

            @knap92
theoretically it should work (but will be close) ; if not perhaps with older version.

should you guys try it, let us know the result please

Hey my old pc back then had a similar spec when i started to use linux, so i can tell you it will definitely work, but your HDD is way to small for that because ubuntu will make a minimum of 2GB SWAP Partition and the rest will be your home and system files and Thats surely not enough

Get a new HDD and try some several Linux Distribution and be happy.
or you can try DSL (Damn Small Linux) which is just 50MB Big, and just made for people with low specs
              Best regard

No problem, just let us know if you need help or if you made it . Btw never use your integrated graphic adapter i just realized that you have one ^^ try to deactivate it and use your nvidia cards.

                  Best regards locan

try ubuntu 10.10 with the cccam auto install scripts, works a treat, i have ubuntu 10.10 with cccam 2.1.3 and oscam auto install script, needed oscam to read my omnikey card reader as cccam alone wouldn't. Load the ubuntu on then let it do updates before trying to run the scripts tho.. (i couldn't get them to load up without the updates 1st)

You can try to install ubuntu server in your machine and if you encounter problems yo can try with an older version, but theorically your machine is capable to run ubuntu.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, and there you go, after restart you will have a graphical interface.

Connect Your old PC to a network with internet access, download Ubuntu Minimal CD and start the installation. It will work just fine if you don't install a GUI (Graphical User Interface). For text-mode this is a configuration i've used many times for webservers or small services:

                              - CPU : 1 GHz
                              - RAM : 128/256 MB
                              - HDD : 20GB (for textmode you won't need more than one GB or two, but the fact the HDD is so small makes me think that the transfer rate on the BUS will be very low, probably ATA33 or so, which is not good)
