how easy it is to share with a friend?

    Hi,

One of my friends is ready to share with me.
he only owns a standard HD s k y box.
what equipment are needed at his end to share with me?
I understand we need something to act as a server at his end? is this need to be a Linux receiver? how does this get connected to his s k y box?!

    thanks

    not necessary a linux receiver
a pc can also do it
but it will be easiest to do it with a linux receiver running enigma 1 or 2
best with 2 so it can run hd channels

      Hello and thanks for reply,

I am not sure I understand the last part of your post? if we want to share HD we need two receivers at his end?!

How do you connect the receiver to s k y box? or do you just replace it with the Linux receiver and place the card in it?!

      Thanks

vimmers simply meant that hd channels require enigma2

        The second you said
Of course, you will need some other "work" on linux receivers ...

          My last question, I promise
If we decided to go with a PC, do we need a null modem cable (RS232) to connect the PC to receiver?

          Thanks

You can connect PC to receiver via null modem cable (RS232).
Better and faster solution is to use a UTP cable. (IP protocol)

                Yes mate,
                It's a simple ethernet cable

On the other hand, I don't think that you can connect your s*y box with the pc in this way...

The above connection can be done only with a pc and a linux based receiver.

                  Hi foxy

I found this a little confusing when I read it so thought I would try to cover all the points in one post.

A $ky HD box cannot be used for sharing. It's not capable of being a server or a client so your friend will need to stop using his $ky HD box and instead buy a Linux receiver and put his viewing card in the new Linux receiver.

He would need to buy a Linux receiver that is capable of viewing HD channels (this is why previous posts said buy an Enigma2 receiver. Receivers based upon Enigma2 are HD capable).

Once his new receiver is setup he will need to connect it to the internet and the best way is with an Ethernet cable to his router. You will only need an RS232 null modem cable to connect the receiver to a PC if you want to flash/change the receivers firmware.

I don't see the point in him using a PC as a server, if he ran a PC as a server he'd still need to buy a Linux receiver as his own client so you are just spending more money.

Final point, he'll need to conifigure his router to port forward connections coming in to his house from your receiver to his new Linux receiver otherwise you won't be able to connect to his server.

                  I hope that make sense!

                    hi guys

I don't want to confuse, but what about the pairing procedure (card+box) s*y introduced. Doesn't that count, or is the official box needed in some way? Or is there still some time?

If you want to share premium channels ($ky Sports or $ky Movies) then the card needs to be paired to a genuine $ky box (so keep the HD box in a cupboard in case of issues, new cards etc). Once the card is paired you need to convert the serial number of the $ky receiver into a hexidecimal box key. The box key and viewing card can then be used in the Linux receiver.

Is this a new way to use a paired-card for cs?

Don't forget the cost of dydns service, most isp's provide dynamic ip address which is no
good for cs, you need a static address for your server. For extra security vpn is worth
                          considering as well.

Some have found that after pairing the card to a linux box the card is not
renewing the entitlements on the linux box so that it needs to be placed in
a genuine Sky box to renew.

Reread this is how it has always been done you use box key generator and get a
key which you then put in your linux box and fools the card so it thinks its in a
genuine Sky box that it has been paired with.
