Newbie looking for way to help out

    Hi Guys,

Im new to the Sat scene, as have been using a KV for a while. However, i have just got a Skybox F5, still awaiting my dish to arrive mind so im not up and running yet.

I haven't yet decided one cline or nline as my dadsx skybox uses an nline. I obviously do not have a slycard, however i was wondering if there is any way i can help with sharing the load?

I've heard someone mention a virtual card, can any one shed any light on this, is there anything i can set up from home to maybe share server loads or anything? I dont just want to be a leech i guess is what im saying, i'd like to give something back.

Hi Donna, welcome to the forum. From my umderstanding, you are looking to share.
As far as I know a skybox is client only, so don't think you'd be able to do this with that receiver.
You'd have to look at a vu+, dreambox, gigablue, etc

      Hi Bokkie,

thanks for your reply, what is the correct terminology i need to use? Can you normally share directly from the box? Do i need a paid sly sub to do this? I can always get another box you see, and ship this one off to the mothers, if it doesnt do what i need.

Im very unsure as to the technology required you see, as im a cable tv 'customer' and have been for the longest time. And with those boxes, there isn't CS in the same sense as with the Sats.

      Thanks again
      Donna

yes you need a paid card (can be any card ) or if you can find a server there has reshare you can also use that (reshare would be the virtual card you mentioned)
and as mentioned a receiver or pc there can share the card

Is your dish going to be a motorised dish?
If it is then there are a lot more options open to you for sharing. You could get a european card and share that with otbers to get sly uk, etc.

Not much to share if you only have 28.2 e. What size dish are you getting? You could also do a multisat setup if you get a decent size dish.

My Dad has a motorised dish, which is brilliant. Im not sure what size he has ordered me to be honest, but i can always take it down once i get a better understanding of how everything works and give myself a nice upgrade. I do love getting my teeth into a new project.
My other half is looking at freesat too so might be able to palm the standard dish on to them and upgrade.

Are there any legalities to the motorised dishes? As it would have to be on th efront of the house to get a decent view of the sky at the desired angle.

I think anything over 1 metres requires planning permission here in the u.k.
To be honest, unless you're looking to pick up 26e, 7w, etc, a decent 80cm-90cm would suffice.

You are correct 1 metre when fixed to a house but i use a 1.2mtr on a ground mount so i can pick up the weaker signals

If i went upto a metre i wouldnt be able to see out of my bedroom window...hahaha!!
Anyways, I'm still waiting for my dish to arrive....eagerly, so i can at least have a play about and get some hands on of what i need to look at o i can get a bit more involved.

I have read in many forums that paid servers are not necessarily the way to go, and it is better to try and share locally swapping lines etc. Is this the general opinion regarding CS? As obviously at present, without anything to share i do not have many other options at present.

Many of us use pay servers without any problems. The key is to take out short subs, I'd say maximum of 3 months, just in case something goes wrong. That way you minimise the potential losses.
Lets not forget that satlover has a premium server as well.

Re: Newbie looking for way to help out

I was thinking about Satlovers premium servers, as at least there is a forum for support. I've been scouring the net and found allsorts of sites but being a newbie i thought i'd get involved in a forum first and ask around.

Once i get my dish up, i'll pick up a short sub as suggested, as that will give me the feel for what i want to do next. As following getting the skybox up and running, i said i'd sort the other half out with one too, hence my option to move to a different box if it will be easier to get more involved.

Just wish the dish would arrive now....grr!!! Im still stuck watching my glitchy KV!!!

                            hi !

here is a rough idea of the process:

                            000. --- hardware
                            010. plug in sat rcvr, cable and lnb
                            020. point the dish to th sat -> a satfinder needed
                            030. fix the dish
                            099.

                            100. --- sat rcvr channel
                            110. set sat freq
                            111. disecq, motor, position, ...
                            120. set channel freq -> scan
                            130. group channel (also called service) into group (called bouquet)
                            140. insert you card
                            198. zap
                            199.

I'm confused by your post? Is this how to set up the box? As i'm aware of that, my initial question was how can i help out?
