Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
A lot of people mistakenly think of it as requiring high broadband
speeds, similar to web streaming, and using up your download limit, in a
few days, neither of which is true.
You still receive your picture via your dish/lnb and receiver the data
over the internet is just the decryption details.
You can download software which will carefully monitor your internet
history so that you can quickly check all your internet usage.
Here is one link:

If you do not reshare your cards, traffic is very low.Is my post useful for you? Please press sigpicComment

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
hi drageek
I don't find it right now, but there's a thread about this here somewhere - we made a calculation once, and if you're only client without reshare (as skytec said) usage is very low ; I believe it's only some kb/s - theoretically open 24/24 and 7/7 I think usage is some hundred Mb.
Really no need to worry if you have 40 Gb a month
Here (belgium) the providers offer the online possibility to check your usage any moment - perhaps inform you there (no soft needed).
Edited: found it (another form - another language), but posted it once here too - result was about 240 MB/month (Also 52 Bytes/s Download - 334Bytes/8s = 41,75 Bytes/s Upload)Comment

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
A little calculation can help:
If you have a good connection you only send your requesting ecms in upload and nearly the same in download.
Lenght of an ecm: 25 - 50 Byte
this means ~100 - 250 byte transmission traffic (lets use 250)
Let's say, you request every 10 seconds an ecm
Result for a month with 30 days:
250 bytes * 6 (per minute) * 60 *24 * 30 (days)
= 64.800.000 bytes traffic
= ~65 MB
You have 40GB = 40.000MB
Even if you modify the calculation (more ecm request [look post from pan1100]) nothing to worry for you.
You can rest easy!

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
My mobile installation on 3g takes around 2 mb per hour to run the satbox ,20mb per day which is really next to nothing the same as downloading a few pics from the internet, when mobile in the camper iam on the free samba 3g three network with a much lower allowance than yours.Comment

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
The keys are usually not that long, and the receiver doesnt always need the key. It might need the key once in 10 or 15 seconds. It import the keys from the card on the server. It means there is less communication between the server and the receiver.
The best example will be to consider P2P and then reduce the download speed to 25b/sec (which is a lot). Leave it for the next hour or so and see how much it can download. It will give you a clear idea about your usage. If you like my post, please don't hesitate to click on "Thanks"button. Thank youComment

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
some providers requesting ecms in 10 to 15seconds, but these times are usually shorter, eg, upc/cryptoworks 5000ms, nds/slyuk 1000ms!HD-BOX FS-9200,SkyStar HD2 USB CI, Skystar2 90Fe Motor, 85Al Multifeed

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
You are looking in terms of MB for heavy use so it is not a factor that affects you.
3G would work, but would be unstable for most packages as 3G signal tends to fluctuate over small time periods. Again, the 3G data allowance will more than suffice but it will not give you the reliability you might need for flawless viewing.Comment

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
I made some calculation on my own regarding the bandwight for the CS.
The process was the following :
24/24 running as a clinent for 1 hole day : 40 Mb per day .
I did not connect to the Internet with my PC during this period I just let the Reciver as clinent to run 24 hours.
Acctually it depends on wath channels you are watching, because NDS take 3 to 4 time more bandwight then other Decrypting systems. NDS take like mirny says 1000 ms, that means that ECM are requested every 1 second !!!------------------------------------------------------

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
With 40GB you will not have any problems, HD or regular channels are the same cause you use your internet for other reason not streaming. better to unplug when not in use.If my post was useful, please, use "Thanks" buttonComment

Re: internet usage (bandwidth)
true, as said I have about 10 or 15 GB and never used more than some GB a month - about the unplugging: we had an interesting thread/discussion on this: see: _http://www.satlover.eu/forum/satellite-discussion-english/41856-how-to-test-if-my-stb-is-still-connected-with-a-cs-server-in-standby.htmlComment
