    Server without router access

Ok , i have unsecured wireless internet in the area and i want to make my dm800 a server but i understand you can't without accessing the router , i tried to access but no luck , various user/pass .
I've heard of a VPN , i would go down this route if it's easy and cheap .
Another way , will it be possible to use a 3G router with a sim as my main router and do it that way ?
    Thanks in advance .

Yes, you can use 3G router without problem, but also wireless connection, problem is not router but firewall and NAT function. You have to open incoming port on router's firewall and pc firewall (if you use it), and if you have a router with NAT function set up correct association port:device for you pc or stb - normally, if you have a router with NAT, port:device association and firewall are set up at the same time.

It is possible to use a 3G sim and routher for CS. It is safer too (according to other members). You can use a 3G pay as you go sim because you dont need a big data bundle for CS. Our members like bokkie and scooterman(i think) had been playing with 3G. They might be able to comment here or you could send them a PM.

There is some discussion about 3G hotspots. Have a look at this link, it might interest you.

Ok , i have read the thread but it doesn't answer my original question as i'm ok being a client with the current setup , no problems there ... what i want is make a server to share externally but need to open port ... that seems to be more difficult ...

From my experience with 3G and sims you have to have 100% exceptional signal quality for this to work as a client nevermind working as a server, IMHO its just not pratical anything over 100ms ping and you can forget it it just wont work.

You have not to open port if you use a receiver because receivers haven't firewall.
You have to open port only if you use a 3G router or a PC with share his 3G connection.

Oh , so you are saying that i can be a server with the dm without access to router ?
                  I didn't think that was possible .

                    Re: Server without router access

Yes, if you connect a supported 3G card directly to your DM. Home router has an embedded firewall that you can also disable, but using a 3G card on your decoder you have a public ip adress without any firewall.

Or, if you use a standard home router open needed port, it's very simple to do: routers are different one by one, but with a simple search on internet you can do that. Try guides to configure (open ports) for some p2p software like emule.

I don't think it will be possible also becuase you will not be able to control the I.P as it could be dynamic and you cannot control the setup of this, hence your clients will not be able to connect when it changes.

You can use Dynamic DNS systems, many of these services like no-ip, dyndns, etc... are free and directly supported by many routers and many Enigma/Enigma2 images.

With DDNS you have a name service like my_name.dyndns.org. Into client config write my_name.dyndns.org inted of ip_address and all work as well.

Ok , let's drop the 3g route for now .

I'm none the wiser if i can be server with the free wifi in my area . Seems like not .

Any other ideas ? VPS ?

                            Re: Server without router access

You can create a VPN FROM your device to your remote decoder. Obviously on your remote decoder/internet connection you have to open port on the router, but doing that you have not to set up port at your end or into the hotspot.

So remote device is VPN server and your local device is the VPN client.
