Sky News iPad timelineSky News has updated its iPad app, at the same time introducing a £4.99 charge for non subscribers to the satellite service.
The move had been trailed by Sky at the app’s introduction in March, but was nevertheless greeted by derision in the comments section of Apple’s iTunes store.
An equivalent iPad app for Sky Italia’s news channel TG24 remains free, but the two year old Sky News International iPhone app is chargeable at €2.39.
Taken in the round the move to charge for its iPad app is in line with the recent introduction of the Sky Go multiscreen service and the general policy by Sky to charge for its content. Last autumn Sky Sports News was removed from the Freeview DTT platform, while the departure of Sky News has itself been mentioned in connection with past plans for terrestrial pay services.
On satellite, Sky News remains in the clear, but is not a part of the Freesat platform.
