Sky launches online 3D-ready pub finder

Sky launches online 3D-ready pub finder

    Thursday, April 1 2010, 10:35 BST

    By Andrew Laughlin,

Sky has today launched an online pub finder so consumers can locate 3D-ready venues for watching the satellite broadcaster's new channel.

On Saturday, Sky will officially start 3D broadcasts to pubs for the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Chelsea.

According to estimates, around 1,500 pubs and clubs in the UK have already signed up to receive the service, and consumers can now log on to the '3D pubs' section on Sky's website to track down a participating venue in their area.

In a statement, Sky said that its installers have been "working hard to ensure the vast majority of pubs on the finder have been kitted out with 3D TVs and 3D glasses in time for the match".

After the April 3 transmission, Sky intends to show at least five more Premier League games in 3D before for the current season ends on May 9.

At the end of May, the firm will also carry live 3D coverage of all Football League play-off finals at Wembley Stadium.

Outside of the sport, Sky's 3D channel will carry a showreel of the firm's 3D content captured to date. The showreel will also be made available to residential customers subscribed to Sky's top tier channels and HD pack.

The Sky 3D channel will actually appear on Sky's electronic programming guide before April 3, but customers wanting to access the preview content ahead of the live date will need to contact Sky with details of their 3D TV set so that the channel can be activated.
