Digital TV trials to be extended in Chile
Before the next October deadline to carry out experimental DTT broadcastings in Chile, a new bill aimed at extending such period for eight months and deepening the legislative discussion about DTT was submitted with the purpose of preventing the Chilean Government from sending a "short fast-approval legislation" to Congress so as to comply with already set schedules.
It is Chilean Senator Soledad Alvear's initiative submitted before the Commission of Transport and Telecommunications of the Chilean High Chamber. Alvear is trying to extend the trial period for DTT broadcastings carried out by the state-owned channel TVN. "The best way to draw up a Legislation that regulates Digital TV is through the extension of such term", stated the officer. Such measure opposes the Government's intention, announced by the media, of sending a short legislation for its rapid approval. "Such legislation happens once every 25 years; therefore it is necessary to hold serious and deep discussions, which cannot be held over a three-month period", she pointed out.
Among those issues to be taken into account when debating on the law, the officer mentioned a pluralism need (through new channels and editorial lines), license granting and advertising and content regulation.
