ESPN Star Sports has launched a new online video/results/community service, ESPN Player, in Singapore, on the same day as its high-definition version, ESPN HD, also launched in the territory. Both services launched via SingTel’s IPTV offering, Mio TV.

ESPN Player provides on-demand online access to sports and programming, both live and library events, throughout the year. Access to the action comes with in-game statistics and scoreboards. In addition, the offering will also give consumers the opportunity to watch their favourite sport while sharing comments with their friends on social networking platforms like Facebook.

In July, ESPN Player will feature Formula One’s British Grand Prix (10-11 July), German Grand Prix (24-25 July) and Hungarian Grand Prix (31 July-1 August); as well as golf major The Open Championship (15-19 July) including additional live coverage from other holes on the course on demand. ESPN Player will also offer exclusive content such as the friendly match between Manchester United and the Major League Soccer (MLS) All Stars (29 July).

Other events available through the service include English soccer’s Community Shield (8 Aug) and the FA Cup (from Nov), NCAA Football (from Sept), and NCAA Basketball (from Nov), and the current Superbike World Championship, MotoGP World Championship and The One Asia Tour.

Manu Sawhney, Managing Director, ESPN STAR Sports, said: “Today, I am very pleased to announce the launch of ESPN Player and ESPN HD, which is a testament to our continued commitment to enrich the viewing experience of sports fans and to set new benchmarks in sports consumption. And we are pleased to have a valued partner in SingTel who shares our commitment to go the extra mile and give Singapore fans the very best in sports content and interactivity.”

Edward Ying, Chief, Content & Media Services Group, SingTel, said: “The entire ESPN STAR Sports stable of channels is now available on mio TV and we are very excited about introducing ESPN Player and ESPN HD exclusively to our customers. SingTel mio TV is fast gaining traction as a serious player in the sports broadcasting arena, and some of the best sports channels and tournaments are now on our platform.”

ESPN Player and ESPN HD will launch in other Asian markets in the upcoming months, added a statement.
