Vodafone re-enters German IPTV market

Vodafone wants to recommence marketing its IPTV offering in Germany in time for the Christmas sales period, this time with a new approach covering several broadcast technologies.
“It will be a hybrid solution involving cable, satellite and IPTV,” Fritz Joussen, head of Vodafone Germany, told newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
“Customers won’t have to throw everything away any more. They will just complement what they already have,” explained Joussen. “We will take what’s freely available from the air and cable - and only what the customers wants on top of that from the internet.”
In August 2009, Vodafone ceased marketing of its IPTV platform while at the same time announcing a new offer to be launched in 2010 which would be more adapted to the needs of the market. Existing customers - according to Vodafone “a few thousand” - can continue to receive the old offer until the relaunch takes place.
With Vodafone’s re-entry, competition will heat up in Germany’s IPTV market. Deutsche Telekom has so far managed to acquire 1.2m customers for Entertain while HanseNet, a subsidiary of Telefónica O2 Germany, says it has a “five-digit number” of customers for Alice homeTV. Industry observers expect the number to amount to around 40,000.
