Global Pay TV revenues top $150 billion in 2009

Global market research company in the Telecom and Media markets Dataxis released its figures on pay television revenues for cable, satellite and IPTV operators.

In 2009, worldwide pay TV revenues remained strong despite unfavorable economic conditions, reaching more than $150 billion at the end of the year.

With an ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) that neared 68$, North Amercia accounted for 58% of TV subscription revenues in 2009. Western Europe held the second spot with a 20% market share in global pay TV revenues. Asia, which accounts for 47% of the worldwide subscriber base, captured less than 9.5% of sales, as ARPUs of some of its major markets such as China and India remain among the lowest in the World. Driven by Brasil, Argentina and Mexico, Latin America’s pay TV market, which remains nevertheless relatively small, saw its market share reach 6% of global revenues. With an ARPU of 10$, Eastern Europe had 4% of the worldwide subscription TV market in 2009.

Counterintuitively, Africa has one of the highest Pay TV ARPUs in the World. With 0.8% of the worldwide pay TV subscriber base, the continent accounted for 1.5% of revenues.
