Sky Sports opened up to mobile and online

Sky Sports opened up to mobile and online

    By Julian Clover

Sky Sports subscribers will be able to access the channel pack free of charge on Sky’s online and mobile platforms until the end of the year.

The satcaster has announced that the ‘bonus’ access will begin on July 12, placing the Sky Sports Pack on the Sky Player and Sky Mobile TV, where a fee would normally apply.

Typically a Sky Sports Pack subscriber will pay an additional £6 per month to view the service on their mobile. Online access would require a £10 Multiroom subscription.

The move could be seen as a means to promote the new media platforms in the run up to the start of the new football season – or as a defensive measure to remind Sky Sports subscribers on other platforms what they are missing in the wake of Ofcom’s Wholesale Must Offer (WMO) ruling.

Earlier this month it was announced that Sky Sports News is leaving the Freeview DTT platform to become a pay-only option. An HD version of Sky Sports News is also in the planning.
