Around 25 million German internet users, or nearly one in two, watch video on the internet, according to research published by BITKOM.

According to the BITKOM-Webmonitor, short videos are the most popular amongst online viewers (40% of all internet users). One in six (17%) of internet users followed TV shows such as the news online, one in eight looks at movies for download or live stream. Live broadcasts of sports events are popular with one in 10 on the internet. Forsa interviewed 1,002 people by telephone on behalf of BITKOM.

“WebTV is a rapidly growing market,” said Axel Schmiegelow, CEO of the German online video portal Sevenload. “People find films and videos that are not available on television, and that can be accessed at any time and from any place.”

The research also shows that typical web TV users tend to be young, male and better educated. Three-quarters under 30s said they watch web TV, but only a quarter of the elderly (over 60). Men watch online television more often than women (53 vs. 44%). Similarly, the higher the formal education, the more television and video services on the internet are used: 53% of high school graduates, but only 36% of people with secondary school.

BITKOM is the association of companies in the information technology, telecommunications and new media industry in Germany.
