VN against TuVes because of World Cup rights in Chile
The Chilean state-owned free-to-air broadcaster TVN sued the DTH operator TuVes for its including the HD experimental channel that broadcasts World Cup soccer games. According to TVN, TuVes "is not authorized and therefore it is an unlawful practice". TVN acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast the Soccer World Cup 2010, but granted DirecTV license to broadcast games through Pay-TV.
With this claim, "we are trying to safeguard TVN's ownership rights of the channel and intellectual rights over its contents", explained the state-owned TV station Strategy and Business Director, Enzo Giacometti. In a press release, Knorad Burchardt, TuVes General Manager, pointed out that "TVN, as a public use national good license holder, cannot avoid that the signal broadcasted by them is received free-of-charge and free-of-discrimination by the whole Chilean population". The company highlighted that it holds "all authorizations and permissions required by the valid legislation regarding high definition satellite TV services, thus fully respecting the juridical ruling".
Just a few hours away from the Chilean national team's debut in the World Cup, the main operator of the country, VTR, joined the controversy and suddenly added the sate-owned HD channel signed to its programming. The argued that "TVN HD is open and free and is available for all Chileans who have a High Definition decoder in the cities of Concepción, Talcahuano and Santiago". On the other hand, Senators Fulvio Rossi (Socialist Party) and José Antonio Gómez (Radical Social-Democratic Party) requested the Interior Minister, Rodrigo Hinzpeter, to intercede so that TVN broadcasts all World Cup games. The request results from the fact that the public channel will only broadcast 32 of the 64 games as the remaining game rights have been granted to DirecTV.
