Nicaraguan satellite pay-TV operator Sky was ordered to interrupt its scheduled programming on Tuesday, 10 January and carry instead live coverage of the country's president, Daniel Ortega, being sworn for a second term.
The order was given by the Nicaraguan Institute of Telecommunications and Postal Services (Telcor), according to local newspaper El Nuevo Diario.
Programming interruptions designed to slot in political broadcasts have been relatively frequent since 2007, when Ortega came to power. However, until now, such enforcements had been limited to domestic TV channels.
This week's became the first time that foreign channels distributed via a DTH platform were also reached by an order of this kind.
Throughout the forced presidential re-inauguration broadcast, Sky kept up a screen message stating that the change in programming was due to a request from telecoms regulator Telcor.
El Nuevo Diario claims to have received an unspecified number of complaints from readers. The newspaper recalls that, both in 2010 and 2011, highly popular live sports coverage of the Baseball World Series – which was being broadcast by ESPN and Fox Sports – was suddenly cut without notice to show government propaganda.
